Introduction
Established in 2014, the Department of General Medicine at Shenzhen Second People’s Hospital serves as a national-level standardized residency training base for general practice. In 2018, the department set up independent general practice inpatient wards and outpatient clinics. It currently operates 20 inpatient beds and two outpatient consultation rooms, including specialized clinics for wasting disorders, health management, chronic disease management, and a veterans’ priority clinic, as well as an independent teaching clinic.
The outpatient facilities are equipped with general practice diagnostic devices and body composition analyzers, while the inpatient wards are furnished with monitors, ECG machines, non-invasive and invasive ventilators, fiberoptic bronchoscopes, and bedside ultrasound machines. An independent teaching demonstration room is also available. The department manages both outpatient and inpatient services for general practice patients, with nearly 1,000 annual discharges and approximately 20,000 outpatient visits.
Specialty Features
Since its inception, the Department of General Medicine has adhered to the development goal of “founding on general medical care, focusing on education, and leveraging research to enhance medical care and teaching”. It utilizes the hospital’s robust medical resources and integrates multidisciplinary expertise to provide holistic and continuous healthcare services, based on the principles of general practice and the bio-psycho-social medical model.
The department collaborates with several stable community-based facilities, including the Dapeng Medical Group Community Health Centers, Meilin Community Health Center, and Xietong Hospital Community Health Center, forming a “hospital-community-family” tri-network system.
Long-term partnerships with specialty departments and community health centers enable the department to conduct diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and management of conditions such as diabetes, coronary heart disease, hypertension, respiratory diseases, thyroid disorders, osteoporosis, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and hyperuricemia. Collaborations with the hospital’s physical examination department facilitate follow-up diagnosis, treatment, and health management for patients after health screenings.
The department is also committed to the comprehensive diagnosis and management of multimorbidities and undiagnosed conditions. Notably, it established Shenzhen’s first clinic for wasting disorders, emphasizing its role as a pioneer in addressing this niche area.
